The film follows the events of a doomed 1977 Halloween special of the late-night talk show Night Owls with Jack Delroy. After losing his wife to cancer Delroy took a sabbatical and has returned to crashing views. In an effort to revive his dying show, Delroy decides to host an occult-themed Halloween special. His guests include the psychic and medium Christou, former magician and skeptic Carmichael Haig, parapsychologist June Ross-Mitchell, and Mitchell's latest subject Lilly D'Abo a girl allegedly possessed by a demonic spirit.

In 1630s New England a banished Puritan family is plagued with panic and despair after the loss of the youngest son Samuel. The family seems to blame Thomasin, the eldest daughter, as she was watching him at the time. As paranoia mounts, two of the children Mercy and John accuse Thomasin of witchcraft. The ensuing suspicion tests the family's loyalty, faith, and love for each other.

Back in 1986 Adelaide encountered a doppelgänger in a funhouse which led to her losing the ability to speak. Years later Adelaide has her own family with a husband named Gabe, a daughter named Zora, and a son named Jason who go on a vacation to that same town where Adelaide had the funhouse experience. Although she is reluctant, she tries to put it aside and enjoy her time with her family. On their first night there, a family of their doppelgängers break into the house. This forces the family into a fight for survival against their "tethered" doppelgängers and the other "tethered" who are intent on replacing their counterparts.
